Hello -
I'm Mr. Canton...your friendly 8th grade global studies teacher! This is my ninth year teaching in St. Michael-Albertville. For the first six years I taught US History, but with a change to the Minnesota standards I have taken on the role of teaching you about...THE WORLD!
Prior to teaching in STMA I student taught in Eau Claire, WI and Prague, Czech Republic. In Eau Claire I taught 6th grade Social Studies at DeLong Middle School. In Prague I taught at the Prague British School where I taught 7th grade geography, and 8th and 10th grade world history. My time overseas in Prague was fantastic, and I had the opportunity to work with students from dozens of countries and cultures.
In October 2013 I married the love of my life, Emilie. In true social studies geek fashion, we tied the knot at the Minnesota History Center! We also have a Boston Terrier named Bodie!
I'm a bit of a self-proclaimed geek. I enjoy all things history, and I love trying to find new ways to incorporate technology into the classroom. Outside of teaching global studies - which I absolutely LOVE doing - I am the coach for the JV girls soccer team. Also during the year I am one of the coordinators for the WEB Program. It's a great program, and you can learn more about it here! In addition to those activities I spent many years as a coach with the STMA United Soccer Club.
In my free time outside of school I enjoy doing a lot of different things - especially if I can be outside. During the summers you can find me camping, golfing, fishing, kicking around a soccer ball, going to concerts, and attending Twins games. When I have the time I also like to read a good book...often times it'll be something that you're reading, rather than some stuffy adult book.
In addition to my time teaching in Europe, a few summers ago I was fortunate enough to be able to study in Germany for with the Goethe Insitut's Transatlantic Outreach Program. In addition to traveling around Germany and seeing the cities of Munich, Potsdam, Stuttgart, Dresden, and Berlin I was also able to spend some time traveling on my own and visited Denmark, Sweden, and Latvia.
I hope that you have a great time in this class. I really, truly enjoy teaching it. I can honestly say that I love my job and I could not be happier with it! Please don't hesitate to let me know about any concerns or questions that you might have. My door is always open, and I'm only a phone call or an email away!
Yours in History,
Mr. C
