Good Morning Global Studies Families –
It has been a while, but with the craziness of winter break, something called a “polar vortex” (???), and everything else I wanted to get back in touch to let you know what we’re up to right now! Most of your students have been busy finishing up a mini-essay that is due this morning about the history of Modern Latin America in preparation for our next chapter on Mexico.
Chapter 9 – Spatial Inequality in Mexico City and Minneapolis
Currently we are exploring the issue of “spatial inequality” in Mexico City – that is, the unequal distribution of wealth or resources in a geographic area causing some areas to be richer than others. We’ll explore the causes and consequences of this inequality. After wrapping our minds around this the students will begin (later this week) researching spatial inequality in our own back yard as they research and explore demographic data in five Minneapolis communities (Calhoun-Isle, Camden, Nokomis, Philips, and University). This will culminate in an essay that compares and contrasts life in Mexico City with life in Minneapolis. All resources for this chapter are in the shared Google folder (which students have access to) or by clicking this link.
Additionally with this chapter students will be taking a “tour” of Mexico city – much of this tour will involve exploring demographic data in Mexico City, analyzing photographs, and listening to recorded interviews in Spanish (also translated into English if their Spanish speaking skills aren’t quite up to par…)! I’m excited for the interview portion as having students listen critically to an interview/podcast is a skill that many don’t get to exercise all that often.
Mid-Tri
Mid-Tri grades will be submitted on Thursday for all students. Because conferences aren’t for a few more weeks (February 13 and 18) please take a moment later this week and check in on your student to see how they’re doing in all their classes. We’re half way through the year – hard to believe! Also, just a friendly reminder to encourage your student to continue to take advantage Schoology for keeping up with due dates, projects, and more.
Take care – and please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns!
